Women's Hormone Therapy in Fort Collins
Reviewed by Cindy Dean, APRN, CNM ·
Testosterone isn't only a men's hormone. Women make it too, in much smaller amounts, and levels decline through the 30s and 40s. When low sexual desire is part of a woman's midlife picture, low-dose testosterone is one of the options a provider may discuss. At Peak Medical Wellness, that conversation happens in person, starts with labs drawn here in Fort Collins, and is led by Cindy Dean, APRN, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife with 30+ years in women's health.

Clinical guidance from major medical societies supports low-dose testosterone for one specific concern: low sexual desire that causes distress (hypoactive sexual desire disorder) in postmenopausal women. That is the use with the strongest evidence behind it.
Women also ask about testosterone for energy, mood, muscle, bone or focus. For those, the evidence is more limited, and your provider will say so. We'd rather tell you what the research shows than promise something it doesn't.

There is no FDA-approved testosterone product made for women. Testosterone for women is prescribed off-label, at doses well below what men use. Standard pharmacy products come in men's strengths, so a woman's dose usually has to be prepared individually, and not every pharmacy does that. At Peak Medical Wellness, prescriptions go through a licensed compounding pharmacy, and your dose is set and monitored by your provider.
Your provider explains the benefits, risks and alternatives of each, and testosterone for women is prescribed off-label with informed consent. Compounded testosterone is prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy and is not FDA-approved.
Testosterone for women starts with the women's hormone and wellness panel, drawn at your first visit. It already includes free and total testosterone with SHBG:
Labs are repeated after you start and after any dose change, then on a routine schedule while you're in care. If you use the cream, your provider will tell you when to apply it on lab day so the result is accurate. Everyone responds differently.
Possible side effects include acne or oily skin, increased hair growth, hair thinning, and irritation where the cream is applied. Call the clinic if any of these appear. Your provider can lower or pause the dose.
Testosterone is usually one piece of a woman's hormone care, not the whole plan. It sits alongside decisions about estrogen and progesterone, menopause and perimenopause care, and thyroid evaluation when labs point there. Start with women's hormone therapy in Fort Collins to see the full picture.
