Men's Hormone Therapy in Fort Collins

Enclomiphene for Men in Fort Collins

Low energy, low drive, or lab results that point to low testosterone, but you'd rather not start injections or you're thinking about having kids? Enclomiphene is an oral option that works with your body's own testosterone production instead of replacing it. At Peak Medical Wellness, it starts the same way every men's visit does: an in-person appointment and labs drawn right here in Fort Collins, with a provider who follows your care at every visit.

How enclomiphene works

Enclomiphene is a tablet, not a hormone. It signals the pituitary gland, the small gland at the base of the brain that directs hormone production, to tell the testes to make more testosterone. Nothing is added from outside the body. Your own production goes up.

Because your body keeps running its own production, enclomiphene generally does not suppress sperm production the way testosterone replacement can. That difference is the main reason a provider may suggest it for men who want to keep the option of having children.

Who your provider may consider it for

  • Men with low testosterone on labs who want to preserve fertility now or later
  • Men who prefer an oral medication to weekly injections or in-office pellet insertion
  • Men with mild-to-moderate low testosterone and otherwise normal pituitary function, as judged by the provider

Enclomiphene vs. testosterone replacement

Here is how enclomiphene compares with testosterone replacement therapy on the three things men ask about most.

FactorEnclomipheneTestosterone replacement
RouteOral tablet, taken at homeInjections at home, or pellets placed in the office
Fertility impactWorks with your own production; generally does not suppress sperm productionCan suppress sperm production while you're on it
AdjustabilityDose adjusted at follow-up visits, based on your labsInjections: adjustable from week to week. Pellets: fixed for the full cycle

Neither is better for everyone. Your provider recommends an option based on your labs, symptoms, fertility plans and preferences.

About the medication

Enclomiphene is prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy and is not an FDA-approved medication. In 2022, an FDA advisory committee voted against adding enclomiphene to the list of substances pharmacies may compound, and the FDA has not made a final decision; while that evaluation continues, it remains available as a compounded medication. Your provider explains the benefits, risks and alternatives before prescribing, and prescribing depends on your labs and evaluation. If you've read about clomiphene citrate, the active ingredient in Clomid®: chemically, clomiphene is a mix of two mirror-image forms, and enclomiphene is one of them. That doesn't make enclomiphene an approved drug. At Peak Medical Wellness we prescribe enclomiphene, a separate compounded product.

Labs we draw at your first visit

Enclomiphene starts with the same men's hormone and wellness panel as every hormone visit at Peak Medical Wellness, drawn at your first appointment:

  • Free and total testosterone, with SHBG
  • Estradiol
  • PSA
  • Thyroid panel (TSH, free T3, free T4)
  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO)
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)
  • Lipid panel
  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Vitamin D

Dose-check labs are repeated after starting or changing therapy, and routine monitoring continues while you're in care. Everyone responds differently.

What follow-up looks like

Follow-ups are in person. Labs are repeated after you start and after any change to your dose, then on a routine schedule while you're in care. At each visit your provider checks how you feel, reviews your numbers and adjusts the plan.

Possible side effects include mood changes and, rarely, visual changes such as blurring or spots. Report any change in your vision right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is enclomiphene the same as testosterone replacement?

No. Testosterone replacement adds testosterone from outside the body. Enclomiphene prompts your body to make more of its own. Your provider will explain which approach fits your labs, symptoms and goals.

Does enclomiphene affect fertility?

Unlike testosterone replacement, which can suppress sperm production, enclomiphene works with your body's own production and is often considered when fertility is a priority. Your provider reviews your individual situation.

Is enclomiphene FDA-approved?

No. It is compounded by a licensed compounding pharmacy for patients whose provider prescribes it after an evaluation. Your provider walks you through benefits, risks and alternatives.

What happens at the first visit?

You'll meet a licensed provider in person, review your symptoms and health history, and have labs drawn at that visit. Your provider reviews the results with you and builds a plan around them.

Do you accept HSA and FSA cards?

Yes. Peak Medical Wellness accepts HSA and FSA cards. What qualifies depends on your plan and IRS rules, so check with your plan administrator. We can provide itemized receipts.
